The Cultural Adjustment Map / Embracing Cultural Differences: A Journey of Understanding

EMBRACING THE COGNITIVE ADJUSTMENT MAP – Part 1

Honouring God in the Normal Journey of Adaptation

  1. Father, in the Name of Jesus, we thank You for this journey of embracing cultural differences on our frontlines.
  2. We bring to remembrance David, who poured out his honest confusion and emotional struggles before You whilst choosing to remember Your faithfulness.
  3. Holy Spirit, we lift up our church members to you and ask You to help them understand where they are on their cultural adjustment map.
  4. Help us to recognise that negative feelings of frustration, tension, and self-doubt are normal and are signs of our human hearts adapting. (Psalm 139:23-24, Psalm 42:11 ESV)

Week 36: Monday 07 September to Sunday 13 September

EMBRACING THE COGNITIVE ADJUSTMENT MAP – Part 2

Seeking God’s Perspective in Shocking Differences

  1. Father, in the Name of Jesus, we thank You for the many examples in Your Word to help us on our journey in embracing cultural differences on our frontlines.
  2. Thank You for enabling us to see Your perspective when dealing with shocking circumstances we may be unfamiliar with.
  3. Like Joseph, who looked past the offence of his brothers’ actions to see Your hand of blessing, in the Name of Jesus we draw on the fruit of patience to pause when we experience shocking or uncomfortable cultural differences – such as the Maasai’s traditional spit-blessing.
  4. We will ask, ‘What does this mean in their culture? ‘ before we make quick, negative judgements and reactions. (Genesis 50:20, James 1:19 ESV)

Week 36: Monday 07 September to Sunday 13 September

EMBRACING THE COGNITIVE ADJUSTMENT MAP – Part 3

Observing, Listening, and Enquiring to Build Trust

  1. Holy Spirit, we thank You for the wisdom and revelation to know You better.
  2. We also recall Solomon, who prayed for an understanding and hearing heart to govern wisely.
  3. Help us that when we face confusing cultural dynamics on our frontlines, we choose the ‘upper road’ of active observation, listening, and asking questions
  4. We declare that by doing so, this establishes genuine relationships of rapport and trust. (1 Kings 3:9, Proverbs 18:13 ESV)

Week 38: Monday 21 September to Sunday 27 September

EMBRACING THE COGNITIVE ADJUSTMENT MAP – Part 4

Rejecting Cynicism, Rationalisation, and Grievances

  1. Lord Jesus, we thank You for teaching us through Your Word how to reject the cynicism we will face on our frontlines.
  2. We come against any rationalisation of the Gospel in every form.
  3. Like Joshua, who stood firm in faith against the cynical, complaining reports of the wilderness wanderers, we also stand firm in our faith in You.
  4. We reject the temptation of the ‘lower road’—refusing to criticise ‘stupid’ customs, rationalise our own superiority, or carry attitudes of arrogance that cause offence and build barriers. (Philippians 2:14-15, Colossians 3:13 ESV)

EMBRACING THE COGNITIVE ADJUSTMENT MAP – Part 5

Week 39: Monday 28 September to Sunday 04 October

Thanksgiving for receiving help to embrace the cultural differences on our frontlines.

  1. Father, in the Name of Jesus, we thank You as we conclude this month of understanding the cultural differences we will face on our frontlines.
  2. Lord Jesus, thank You that You are our prototype, our pioneer in how to embrace and navigate differences in ways of thinking and doing within the cultures we will meet.
  3. Holy Spirit, we continue to ask for Your Wisdom and Revelation to help us on this journey. Amen and Amen. (Romans 12:2, Hebrews 12:2, Ephesians 1:17-18 ESV)
