The Effective Cross-Cultural Worker
Week 40: Monday 05 October to Sunday 11 October
KEYS TO SUCCESS IN CROSS-CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT – Part 1
Prioritising Relationships and Friendships
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, we thank You for Your calling to go to the ends of the earth as Your chosen servants to bring the Gospel into new communities. (Matthew 28:19-20 ESV).
- We ask that You continue to shape us into effective cross-cultural workers, marked by deep interpersonal grace and a steadfast identity in Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:10 ESV).
- Like Paul, who shared not only the Gospel but also his very life, we ask for strong interpersonal skills—that we would actively smile, sit with our neighbours, learn their children’s names, and prioritise loving relationships so that Your Word is welcomed and deeply appreciated in their hearts. (1 Thessalonians 2:8, Ezra 7:10 ESV).
- Holy Spirit, help us to model Daniel, who adapted to the language and literature of Babylonia while remaining devoted to You. We declare we will utilise the flexibility to respond to new ideas and cultural viewpoints, keeping our hearts open rather than closing down conversations when differences emerge. (Daniel 1:4, Colossians 4:6 ESV).
Week 41: Monday 12 October to Sunday 18 October
KEYS TO SUCCESS IN CROSS-CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT – Part 2
Showing Respect That Makes Others Feel Valued
- Holy Spirit, we thank You for being our teacher, for reminding us of the Father’s heart – that He wants all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth of His Word and love. (1 Timothy 2:4, Ephesians 3:19 ESV).
- In the Name of Jesus, we declare this is our priority, and we draw on the fruits of the Spirit and the many examples in Your Word to show respect and honour to each other and those on our Frontlines (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV).
- Like Abraham, who bowed respectfully before the Hittite landowners of Canaan, we draw on Godly wisdom to study our community’s customs so we can show respect in ways that are culturally understood, ensuring our neighbours feel truly valued and honoured. (Genesis 23:7, 1 Peter 2:10 ESV).
Week 42: Monday 19 October to Sunday 25 October
KEYS TO SUCCESS IN CROSS-CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT – Part 3
Becoming Attentive and Caring Listeners / Nurturing and Maintaining Lifelong Trust
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, we thank You for the mandate of being Your Kingdom Ambassadors on our Frontlines, displaying Your power, dominion and glory through Your love and care for others. (2 Corinthians 5:20, Acts 1:8 ESV).
- Nehemiah listened closely to the cries and feelings of his people before speaking. Therefore, we declare that we will be patient to listen carefully to those we reach, checking our understanding and enquiring gently so they feel truly heard and cared for. (Nehemiah 1:4, James 1:19 ESV).
- Like Jonathan, who continually went out of his way to strengthen his bond of friendship with David, we pray for the commitment to build, maintain, and protect our relationships with non-Christians on our Frontlines, continually coming back to the end goal of nurturing trust. (1 Samuel 23:16, Proverbs 17:17 ESV).
Week 43: Monday 26 October to Sunday 31 October
KEYS TO SUCCESS IN CROSS-CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT – Part 4
Growing in Sensitivity to Local Ways / Holding Positive yet Realistic Expectations
- Lord Jesus, we thank You for teaching us through Your Word how to be sensitive and positive whilst having realistic expectations on our Frontlines.
- Like Paul in Athens, who walked through the city to observe their altars and cultural objects, we ask for cultural sensitivity to understand local greetings, political realities, and daily habits, respecting them in our daily witness. (Acts 17:23, 1 Corinthians 9:20 ESV).
- Like Joshua and Caleb, who realistically evaluated the giants of the land but remained positive and expectant of Your goodness, we ask for realistic pre-departure expectations that protect us from disappointment while keeping us eager for a rewarding harvest. (Numbers 14:7-8, Galatians 6:9 ESV).
