Week 7: Provision, Health and Healing

A Deep Dive into 3 John 2 — Akin Akinyemi

Main text for the week. (3 John 2)
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.  (KJV).
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers. (AMPC – Amplified Classic)
2My heartfelt prayer for you, my very dear friend, is that you may be as healthy and prosperous in every way as you are in soul. (J.B. Phillips)

We thank God for another opportunity to commit this final week of consecration to our theme: Provision, Health, and Healing. If there is one scripture that captures the essence of the theme, it would be our main text, 3 John 2, because it addresses prosperity and health.  Surprisingly, it does not address healing.

Monday 30th March: I wish above all things
Setting the foundation for our prayers this week.
When the Apostle says, “I wish above all things,” this means there are other things to consider, but the one thing that he would prioritise above others is this one. While I have read this portion so many times, I saw something different this time around that is shaping how I think about things.

Foundation 1: Find the “One thing” that is the most important. What changes your heart and not what satisfies your lust.
What is the one thing that you need to prioritise above all and why? We all have so many prayer points, but what is the one prayer point you should prioritise? As we study the scriptures, we find multiple stories where the one-thing rule was applied.

Story 1 –  The man who wanted eternal life (Mark 10,17-21)
17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21 Then Jesus, beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

Story 2 – Martha and Mary, Luke 10:41-42
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

One thing being needful did not mean that the other parts were not needed. It simply means that if you had to choose between the many things and the one thing, and you could not do both, you need to choose the one thing that will be transformational. We don’t grow by being transactional; we grow by being transformational.

Foundation 2 – We are the gatekeepers of the mind that lives in us.
Philippians 2:5-9 (KJV)
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

Don’t be so eager to preserve your status before people that you miss the opportunity you have to transform your mind before God. A transformed mind is one that releases and manifests God’s glory. Transactional minds have no depth.

Prayer point:
Our prayer point throughout this week is going to be rooted in Hebrews 4:10-16 (KJV).

Hebrews 4:10-16 (KJV)
10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. 14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Tuesday 31st March: Proposer and be in Health
Now that we have our foundation sorted, let’s return to our text. The Apostle wished above all this that we prosper and be in health.

(J.B. Phillips)

  1. We have two thoughts here, and then we pray for grace.
Many people have died not because medical care did not have a solution to their ailments. They died because they could not afford medical care. Prosperity is often a prerequisite for health. Prosperity governs education, education enlightens, and illumination reveals paths to progress.I attended an event in Spain sometime last year and heard a lady speak. She was very well known but had developed a terminal disease, and because she was wealthy, she travelled to see a specialist in New York who mentioned that there was an experimental treatment with a high success rate that they could consider.  The specialist was right. The experimental treatment saved her life. Imagine if she could not afford the trip to New York. Imagine if she did not have access to such specialists. She would have been a historical reference point today.
  2. Notice that the scripture did not say, prosper and be healed. It said, prosper and be in health. The Amplified version also expands on it, saying, “prosper in every way and that your body may keep well. We are going to ask God to open our eyes and protect our feet from evil. We need to be knowledgeable about the foods that support health and those that undermine it, so we can choose wisely. Also, very importantly, we need resources to buy healthy, organic foods and avoid constantly eating foods that cause long-term damage.

Prayer point:
“Father, grant me mercy and let grace come. Deliver me from the mistakes of ignorance.”

Hebrews 4:10-11, 16 (KJV)
10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Numbers 24:16 (King James Version)
14 And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days. 15 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: 16 He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all. (2 Thessalonians 3:16)

Wednesday 1 April:  As your soul prospers – 1 (Manifesting your mind in your body)

(J.B. Phillips)

The prosperity of the mind (the internal configuration of the heart, the organ from which flow the issues of life) governs the extent to which life manifests in the body. Romans 8:11 tells us this.

Romans 8:11 (AMPC)
11 And if the Spirit of Him Who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, [then] He Who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also restore to life your mortal (short-lived, perishable) bodies through His Spirit Who dwells in you.

This is one scripture that has always made me think: is it passive, or is there something I need to do to restore life to my mortal body? Whether the Holy Spirit is in me or not is not in doubt. How he gets into my body is another

Isaiah 58:6-12 (King James Version)
Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy reward. Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; 10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day: 11 And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. 12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

When I read that statement,  ..that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?.. I understood that it is my spirit man that has the responsibility of letting the life of God permeate my body and my clothes

We have evidence of this life pouring out of people and infusing mortal bodies and garments throughout the scriptures.

  1. The woman with the issue of blood touched the garment of Jesus (Matthew 9:19-21 (KJV)
19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. 20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: 21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
  2. As many as touched Jesus were made whole (Matthew 14:35-36 (KJV)
35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
  3. As many as touched Jesus were made whole (Acts 19:11-13)
11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: 12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. 13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

Prayer point:
“Father, help me to keep my body under and to bring it into subjection.”

1 Corinthians 9:26-27 (KJV)
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Thursday 2nd April: As your soul prospers – 2 (No Boundaries)

Main text for the week. (3 John 2)
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.  (KJV).
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers. (AMPC – Amplified Classic)
2My heartfelt prayer for you, my very dear friend, is that you may be as healthy and prosperous in every way as you are in soul. (J.B. Phillips)

One of the things I like about the presentation of this verse is that it does not put boundaries on prosperity or health. Essentially, if your soul can get to it, your body can experience it.

Ephesians 3:19-21(King James Version)
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Our experiences are limited by our thoughts. If you think you can make it, you can, and if you think you can’t, you can’t. Hebrews 4:11 talks about labouring to enter into your rest.

11
Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Entering your rest means to get to a point deep in your consciousness when you get to a point, by the word of God, when you recognise the deposit of the Holy Spirit into you, and you know that it is impossible for you not to get what you have believed for.

Mark 11:23-24 (King James Version)
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Look at the pattern.

  1. Your desire – This has to be rooted in the Word of God.
  2. You pray – This might be all manner of prayers
  3. You receive (This is the point that I am referring to. Once you cross here, it is impossible for someone to convince you that you will not get the outcome. This point is a deposit of the Spirit. 19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, (Philippians 1:19). It is the moment when the scriptures turn to life. It is a definite point in prayers. The old timers called it “the gusher”.
  4. You shall have. Sometimes this is immediate, at other times, if could take a week, it could take a generation. It all depends on what you are asking God for.

Prayer point:
“Father, let the daystar dawn in my heart.”

Hebrews 4:10-11, 16 (KJV)
10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

2 Peter 1:18-20 (King James Version)
18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. 19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

Friday 3rd April  – As your soul prospers – 3 (Keeping the heart clean)

Main text for the week. (3 John 2)
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.  (KJV).
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers. (AMPC – Amplified Classic)
2My heartfelt prayer for you, my very dear friend, is that you may be as healthy and prosperous in every way as you are in soul. (J.B. Phillips)

1 Kings 8:58-62 (King James Version)
58 That he may incline our hearts unto him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his judgments, which he commanded our fathers. 59 And let these my words, wherewith I have made supplication before the Lord, be nigh unto the Lord our God day and night, that he maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times, as the matter shall require: 60 That all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is God, and that there is none else. 61 Let your heart therefore be perfect with the Lord our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day62 And the king, and all Israel with him, offered sacrifice before the Lord.

The evidence of a right heart is shown by the words spoken. You cannot reach the point where you have received the daystar in your heart and are still trusting God for the thing. You simply have a sense that God has done it. You may not have the material proof to show, but you know it exists. It is like having money in your bank account, but you cannot access it until you go online. The time you discover who has the deposit and who does not is in the day of adversity. When you present your faith debit card, the outcome appears. You know who has the deposit and who only has the theoretical equivalent.

Proverbs 4:22-24 (King James Version)
22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. 23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. 24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

Prayer point:
“Father, I repent of negative thoughts and motives. Grant me a clean heart and cleanse my thoughts.”

Psalm 51:9-11 (King James Version)
Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

Saturday 4th April  – As your soul prospers – Use your gifts in the midst of the adversity.

(J.B. Phillips)

We will examine the story of Joseph here.

Never stop using the gift that God has given you while going through a challenge. God’s gifts need to be nurtured. This is the same gift you will need to use when you get to the palace. Imagine if Joseph got so offended that he did not interpret the dreams of the butler and the cook. Your gift is your reference point.

Prayer point:
“Father, I thank you for your investment in me. I am beautifully and wonderfully made. Lord, hear me and be attentive to my cry”
